All prospective cadet candidates must:
- Be at least 17 years old and not have passed their 22 birthday by July 1 of the year they enter the Prep School
- Be eligible to be a U.S. citizen
- Be unmarried and have no dependents
- Meet specific medical standards for a commission in the Air Force
Active Duty Airmen
Only Air Force enlisted members, including Reserve and Guard, may apply directly to the Prep School, via Air Force Form 1786. The form is submitted through your unit commander and Military Personnel Flight (MPF). Consult Air Force Instruction (AFI) 36-2021 for further details.
If you attend the Prep School and are not selected for an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, you will be made available for assignment to other duties.
If you apply for, and do not receive, an appointment to the Academy, you will automatically be considered for a Prep School appointment.
Civilian selectees are placed on active duty as Air Force Reserve airmen while attending the Prep School. If you are not selected for an appointment to the Academy after the Prep School, Reserve Air Force candidates are discharged with no further obligation to the Air Force.
Other Military Enlisted
Enlisted members from the Army, Navy and Marine Corps are considered as and eligible for appointments as civilians.
