U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Retired Lt. Gen. Charles R. Hamm, the 11th Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy, passed away July 23. Funeral arrangements are pending. Hamm helped shape generations of cadets during a pivotal period in Air Force history.
“Lt. Gen. Hamm’s legacy is one of distinguished service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to our Air Force and our Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Tony D. Bauernfeind, Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy. “His impact as a command pilot, a combat veteran, and as our Superintendent continues to resonate. We are grateful for his contributions to our institution and our nation.”

Lt. Gen. Hamm’s distinguished career began after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1956. A command pilot with over 4,000 flying hours, his service spanned numerous key assignments. He flew F-100s in France and West Germany, served as a forward air controller with the 101st Airborne Division, and was a member of the prestigious U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the “Thunderbirds.”
During the Vietnam War, he flew 103 combat missions as a flight commander with the 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron. His leadership abilities were further recognized through several command assignments, including Commander of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing—the “Wolf Pack”—at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea, and Commander of the 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. His expertise was also sought in the diplomatic sphere, serving as the defense attaché to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from 1981 to 1983.
Lt. Gen. Hamm served as the Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy from June 1987 until his retirement on July 1, 1991. During that time, he guided the academic and military training environment amid the critical late Cold War transition period. Dedicated to honoring the history of American airpower, he facilitated the May 1988 campus dedication of the Tuskegee sculpture on the Academy’s Honor Court. Additionally, he championed outreach support and motivational programs like the Academy Awareness Team to engage and recruit a variety of prospective cadets.

His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Bronze Star Medal.
Following his military career, he continued to lead in the private sector as the President of Express One Airlines.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, a sister, two children, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
