Accelerating Change Through Research
At the U.S. Air Force Academy, research isn’t just an academic pursuit; it’s a mission. A mission to develop the intellect, judgement and leadership skills future officers will need to serve in an increasingly complex world.
The Academy’s research is designed first and foremost to develop cadets as future officers, preparing them to think critally, solve complex problems and lead in uncertain environments. But, cadets aren’t waiting until they commission to serve; they are helping to provide tangible contributions to the warfighter right now. Through hands-on research, cadets apply classroom knowledge to the nation’s toughest challenges. This experience strengthens their ability to lead in dynamic and unpredictable environments, preparing them to defend our nation with intellect, agility and integrity.

The Academy is at the forefront of cutting-edge advancements that enhance national defense. Our world-class faculty bring operational experience and technical expertise into their classrooms and research labs.
They ensure our cadets receive an education grounded in the realities of the complex world they will serve. Guided by eight Strategic Research Areas, cadet and faculty research aligns with the Department of the Air Force and warfighter priorities. Our research is
advancing solutions for the challenges that will define the future fight.
At the Air Force Academy, research isn’t just about discovery. It’s about developing the leaders who will shape the future of the Air and Space Forces. One cadet at a time, we are building warriors, innovators and leaders of character, ready to meet the challenges of an ever-evolving battlefield.

Strategic Research Areas
Preparing Future Warfighters. Advancing National Security. Driving Discovery.
The Academy’s Strategic Research Areas (SRAs) provide the framework that aligns cadet and faculty research with the Department of the Air Force’s most pressing challenges. The SRAs help bridge the gap between the classroom and the battlefield, ensuring research produces relevant, innovative and low-cost solutions to pressing operational needs.

Why Strategic Research Areas?
