Week of Sept 20 – 26

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for the Week of September 20th through the 26th — 

This week, back in 1952 — Flying an F-86 Sabre, Captain Robinson Risner destroys two MiG-15 aircraft, becoming the 20th ace of the Korean War.  Retired Brigadier General Risner is the exemplar for the Class of ’21. 

…Also this week, back in 1958 –– Headquarters United States Air Force Academy publishes General Order Number 32, establishing the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery.  Less than a week later, on 28 September, the first funeral was held at the facility, for Lieutenant General Hubert Harmon, the Academy’s first Superintendent. 

…And, this week back in 1994 –– The Base Fitness and Sports Center presents the first 20-mile Cross Country Challenge.  All but two of the 31 runners who started the race made it to the finish. 

…Finally, this week back in 2018 — Brigadier General Andrew Armacost, Academy Dean, is notified of his selection as a member of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) board.  He was one of only a dozen educators in the U.S. that year to receive the fellowship, which was given in recognition of his substantial contributions to education and public service.
