Bio

Colonel Steven C. M. Hasstedt is the Permanent Professor and Head, Department of Biology, U.S Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO. He leads a 25-member department with 20 undergraduate biology courses designed to create awareness, appreciation, and an understanding of science and the principles of scientific reasoning. His team, working with DoD and national laboratories, leads an innovative research program engaging cadets through classroom experience, independent study, and summer internships to support national security interests.

Colonel Hasstedt received his commission and degree from the United States Air Force Academy, CO, in 1992. He has served in numerous operational transportation and aerial port squadron assignments and staff tours with Air Mobility Command and U.S. Joint Forces Command. He led a multinational logistics working group at Joint Forces Command, consisting of personnel from Headquarters North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Joint Staff J4, U.S. Transportation Command, and 13 nations focused on improving coalition logistics information exchange. He was the first non-rated commander of Detachment 1, 715th Air Mobility Operations Group, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), where he served as the primary advisor to the U.S. Navy and British Commanders on mobility operations. During his second command, he led the 729th Air Mobility Squadron, Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal, to honors as the 2009 AMC Small Air Terminal Unit of the Year. His wife Anne-Marie, a Civil and Environmental Engineer, is a retired Lieutenant Colonel and they are the proud parents of two daughters, Madeleine and Leah.
