Visual Arts

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for,” American painter Georgia O’Keeffe once said. Visual art opens up new possibilities for sharing ideas that extend beyond the page or the canvas; we’re excited to include a wide range of visual art, including photography, ceramics, sculpture, watercolor and oil paintings, pen-and-ink drawings, and more.

About the Mitchell Hall Outdoor Study Space Addition:

Designed for a final portfolio in the Human-Systems Interaction Course I took during my Singapore exchange, this CAD model was intended to emulate an outdoor, naturally lighted study space atached to
Mitchell Hall. This was designed with the intention to block wind while increasing opportunities to study
outside and use environmentally friendly materials. Tables and chairs would have easily accessible
outlets and balcony could provide a place to planet greenery and conduct outdoor experiments with the
    open space.

Created with Grasshopper 3D and Rhino software, fully adjustable design that “algorithmically generates
geometry by composing diagrams that link data to functions” (Grasshopper 3D).

  • Dr. Beth Schaubroek and Dr. Julie Barnes

My colleague Julie Barnes (Western Carolina University, visiting faculty member at USAFA for the 20092010 academic year) and I created this art collaboratively to demonstrate the intersection of mathematics and art and to represent some of the core principles of the Air Force Academy. This computer-generated art has underlying equations on the complex plane where we first projected the output to be a real number. This creates a surface, and we carefully chose the right contour lines (think of elevation lines on a hiking map) to produce the best artistic designs.

In Above All, we have a representation of the overarching view of the different classes in the cadet wing, all working together to become Team USAFA. The lines swirl together to connect the different classes and different individuals to create the whole. In Four Classes, we use the exact same function as for Above All and zoom in to see a representation of the four different class years, along with the interconnectedness between them. In each of the four parts, we can see individuals connected directly to each other, almost as if they are holding hands. In Teamwork, we use a different but related function to see a representation of the teamwork among four individuals. It also resembles seeing a Wings of Blue team flying together.
