Bio

Major Ian “Soho” Ferguson is an instructor is Physics in the Physics and Meteorology Department at the U.S. Air Force Academy, CO (USAFA).  Major Ferguson entered the Air Force in 2013 after commissioning from USAFA.  He received his Master of Science in Physics from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in 2015.

While at USAFA, he worked with the Academy’s Center for Space Situational Awareness to characterize geosynchronous satellites with slitless spectroscopy and worked at the National Security Agency on remote sensing capabilities.   At AFIT, his thesis involved the analysis of photoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence in lithium aluminate and lithium gallate crystals.

Major Ferguson graduated from Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training in 2016 and was selected to fly the B-1B Lancer.  He completed the B-course with the 28th Bomb Squadron at Dyess AFB, TX, then joined the 37th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, SD.  At the 37th, he served as a scheduler, assistant weapons and tactics flight commander, training flight commander, and resource advisor and upgraded to aircraft commander in the B-1B.  In 2019, he deployed to Kandahar AB, where he served as an air advisor to the Afghan National Air Force employing the C-208, MD-530, and UH-60 aircraft.  In addition to his role as a physics instructor, Major Ferguson flies the T-53 at the Academy airfield.
