10th CES firefighters set world record at regional competition

Firefighters assigned to the 10th Civil Engineering Squadron doused the competition to set a world record at the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge, June 29 in Longmont, Colorado.
Their over-40-relay competition time of 1:10:92 blistered the competition, qualifying the firefighters to compete in the World Championships in October at Louisville, Kentucky.
“It felt really good to win,” said 10th Firefighter Anthony McMurtry, a civilian firefighter at the squadron. “We’ve been together for eight years and been so close so many times for the open. But to now do it in the over-40 category? Well, that just felt really, really good.”
The Scott challenge is a timed, five-event obstacle course requiring firefighters to simulate fighting a fire and rescuing a victim.
The firefighters, based at the U.S. Air Force Academy, have regularly competed on the world stage for the past decade, logging consistent wins and making Colorado Springs an international powerhouse in the Firefighter Combat Challenge.
Along with the over-40 relay team’s world record, 10th CES Fire Chief Kenneth Helgerson took first place in the over-50 category while Academy firefighters Joe Stacker and Roy Dalton placed second in the over-40 tandem race. Team relay firefighters took third and second during both days of competition.
These results qualify each firefighter and team to compete for the title of “Worlds’ Best.”
