The Week of April 19th-25th

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for the Week of April 19th through the 25th — 

This week, back in 1942 — One day after leading the B-25 raid on Tokyo, Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle is advanced two grades to Brigadier General.  He’s the namesake of the Association of Graduates’ headquarters building and exemplar for the Class of ’00. 

…Also this week, back in 1969 — The Academy skeet team wins top honors in the American portion, and second place in the International division of the First National Skeet and Trap Championships in Iowa City.  Glen Vickery, Class of ‘70, was the top cadet performer. 

…And, this week back in 1994 — The Cadet History Club presents General Charles Horner, Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Space Command, in Fairchild Hall.  He discussed the Persian Gulf War.  He had commanded U.S. and allied air operations during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. 

…Finally, this week back in 2015 — The fifth Air Force Academy Athletic Hall of Fame class is inducted during a dinner at the Hotel Elegante in Colorado Springs.  The new inductees are swimmer Maiya Anderson (Class of ’97), men’s basketball player Raymond Dudley (’90), men’s golf coach Gene Miranda, javelin national champion Dana (Pounds) Lyon (‘06), men’s basketball coach Bob Spear, football player Bart Weiss (‘86), and the 1958 football team.
