Bio

Lieutenant Colonel Brian Yoakam serves as an Instructor and Course Director in the Department of Political Science (DFPS) and the Deputy Director of the Eisenhower Center for Space and Defense Studies at the United States Air Force Academy. In this role, he supports research initiatives, policy analysis, and curriculum development, focusing on national security, space policy, and American government.

Lieutenant Colonel Yoakam is a career space and missile defense officer with over 17 years of experience at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels. He has served as Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) Crew Commander, Chief of Weapons and Tactics, Missile Defense Integration Officer, as well as an AETC Instructor and member of a Commander’s Action Group. His operational experience includes assignments at Pacific Air Forces and combatant command air operations centers supporting Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. He played a key role in standing up U.S. Space Command, shaping space warfighting strategy, missile defense integration, and operational readiness.

Lieutenant Colonel Yoakam holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from American University, a Master of Military Operational Art and Science from Air Command and Staff College, and a Master of Science in Space Operations from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is a graduate of Air War College and a Schriever Space Scholar. His research interests include national security policy, deterrence strategy, and the intersection of space operations and military doctrine.
