Bio

Captain Matthew J. Buxkemper is currently an Instructor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado. In this capacity, he develops leaders of character for the Air Force and Space Force by advising, teaching, and mentoring cadets in officership, engineering sciences, and construction practices.

Prior to joining the faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Capt. Buxkemper served as Operations Flight Commander, 765th Air Base Squadron, Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal, where he led 100 military and civilian engineers providing engineering expertise and operational support. He also directed maintenance and repairs on the installation's buildings, roadways, utilities, and airfield, while optimizing the future operation and performance of the $2 billion infrastructure through data-based investment decisions.

Capt. Buxkemper entered the Air Force in Dec 2009, enlisting as a Ground Radar Systems Apprentice, cross-training in Jan 2014 as an Engineering Assistant, and commissioning in Jun 2018 as a Civil Engineer Officer through the Air Force Officer Training School program after graduating from Florida State University. His background includes experience in land survey, site preparation and development, drafting, construction project programming, construction project management, asset management, installation management, and civil engineer readiness. He has served in in a variety of squadron types, including Air Control Squadron, Civil Engineer Squadron, REDHORSE Squadron, and Air Base Squadron, and deployed in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and INHERENT RESOLVE.
