Tuesday, December 9th

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Tuesday, December 9th —

On this day, back in 1971 — A dedication ceremony is held for the Minuteman III missile static display in front of the Cadet Field House.  The Superintendent, Lieutenant General A. P. Clark, and Cadet Don Rightmyer, Class of ’73, spoke at the event. The missile remained in that location until it was removed on August 20, 2008 due to deterioration and the presence of asbestos.

…Also on this day, back in 2021 — Second Lieutenant Isaiah Sanders, Class of ’20, receives the Wuerffel Trophy, college football’s most prestigious off-the-field award.  Sanders played football at Air Force and finished his college football career with two years as a graduate transfer to Stanford University.  The award, created in 2005, was presented to the football player who best combined exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field.
