Weekend of February 7th and 8th

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Thursday, February 5th --   On this day, back in 1983 -- For the fifth time, the Academy plays host to the Colorado Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament.    …Also on this day, back in 2006 -- Bryce Fisher, Class of ’99, plays in the NFL’s Super Bowl XL for the Seattle Seahawks, who lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 21-10.  He was the second Air Force Academy graduate to play in a Super Bowl, following Chad Hennings, Class of ’88.  …for recent photos of cadet activities, follow us on FLICKR @ AF_Academy!

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Wednesday, February 4th --  On this day, back in 1962-- An episode of the “Lassie” television show featuring the Academy airs on CBS.  In the program, the famous collie came to the Academy with his family to present a falcon to the Cadet Wing during a parade.  Stars of the show Jon Provost and June Lockhart visited the Academy for the filming.  …Also on this day, back in 2017 -- Gregg Popovich, Class of ’70, wins his 1,128th game as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association, setting an NBA record for most wins with one...

Weekend of January 31st and February 1st

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for the weekend of January 31st & February 1st --  On this weekend, back in 1970 -- Lieutenant General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. retires from active duty.  On December 9, 1998, President William Clinton would call him out of retirement for one day and advance him to the rank of four-star general in a ceremony at the White House.  General Davis Jr. is the recipient of the Academy’s 1995 T. D. White Award and the namesake of the Academy airfield.  …Also on this weekend, in 1990 -- The Academy’s Cadet Chorale performs for President George H. W. Bush and members of Congress at the National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C.  …all...

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Thursday, January 29th --   On this day, back in 1953 -- Missouri Congressman Dewey Short introduces a bill, House Resolution 2328, to establish the Air Force Academy.  Though the bill was revised and the number was changed, this was the legislation that would eventually pass.  Also on this day, in 1993 -- An Honor Code survey is administered as part of a plan established in 1984.  The results caused concern and led to the establishment of a special committee to study both the Honor Code and the Honor System at the Academy.  …for a behind-the-scenes look at cadet life, follow us on Instagram at AF_Academy!

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Wednesday, January 28th --  On this day, back in 1971 -- Brigadier General Walter Galligan becomes the Commandant of Cadets, succeeding Brigadier General Robin Olds.  …Also on this day, back in 1986 -- The Space Shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all seven crewmembers.  Colonel Richard Covey, Class of ’68, had been the mission’s Capsule Communicator. The shuttle program was halted for two years while flaws were corrected.  On September 29, 1988, Covey would pilot the first post-Challenger space shuttle flight.  …for recent photos of cadet activities, follow us on FLICKR @ AF_Academy!
