This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Monday, November 24th —
On this day, back in 1968 — Cadet Mike Ryan, Class of ’70, wins the National Collegiate Cross Country Championship. The race was run at Manhattan College, Bronx, New York. He set the NCAA record 29 minutes, 16.8 seconds for the six-mile distance. He finished second the following year, one spot ahead of legendary runner Steve Prefontaine of the University of Oregon.
…Also on this day, back in 1991 — The Space Shuttle orbiter Atlantis launches from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Frederick Gregory, Class of ’64, served as the commander of mission STS-44, while Terence Hendricks, Class of ’74, was the pilot.
