Monday, January 5th

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Monday, January 5th —

On this day, back in 1959  The Academy Library is officially dedicated.  It was described as “one of the most imposing collegiate libraries in the United States” by a group of nationally recognized librarians and educators.  The 78,000 square foot facility had shelving space for 50,000 volumes and seating for 800 students.

…Also on this day, back in 1967 — The Colonel James Jabara Award for Airmanship is established.  Each year, the Jabara Award goes to an Academy graduate, living or deceased, whose actions directly associated with an aerospace vehicle set him/her apart from contemporaries.  With 15 kills, Colonel Jabara was the second leading Air Force ace of the Korean War.  He was also the first American jet ace.
