This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Wednesday, January 21st —

On this day, back in 1967 — First Lieutenant Donald Spoon, Class of ’64, becomes a prisoner of war when his F-4C “Phantom II” aircraft is shot down during a MiG combat air patrol mission over Kep Air Field, North Vietnam. Promoted to Captain while in captivity, he would be released on March 4, 1973.

…Also on this day, back in 2021 — The Academy hosts a panel discussion on the topic “Warrior Ethos as Airmen and Citizens.” Livestreamed to all cadets, the event was part of the Center for Character and Leadership Development’s “Continuing the Conversation” series, a precursor to the National Character and Leadership Symposium. Among the panelists were the Superintendent, the Commandant of Cadets, the Dean of the Faculty, the Director of Athletics, and two cadets.
