This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Thursday, January 8th —
On this day, back in 1968 — Flight training takes place at the Air Force Academy for the first time with the maiden flight of the Cessna T-41C “Mescalero.” Cadet Frederick Bassett, Class of ’68, and his instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Joe Price, Director of Operations, launched at dawn. Lieutenant Colonel Edward McSorley Jr. commanded the 3253rd Pilot Training Squadron, which came under the Air Training Command.
Also on this day, in 1973 — Peace talks to end American involvement in the Vietnam War resume in Paris, resulting in a comprehensive cease-fire signed on January 23, 1973. The release of the 519 American Prisoners of War, to include 30 Academy graduates, began the following month.
