Thursday, December 18th

This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Thursday, December 18th —

On this day, back in 1972 — Operation Linebacker II, the bombing of North Vietnam north of the 20th parallel, begins after North Vietnamese leaders reject President Richard Nixon’s peace negotiation demands.  The 11-day campaign, with a suspension of bombing on Christmas Day, was designed to force the North Vietnamese back to the bargaining table.  Two Academy graduates were killed in B-52 crashes during the campaign.

Also on this day, in 1995 — The Community Center Chapel is closed for renovations.  Changes to the Chapel, which was dedicated on January 22, 1967, included moving the altar, moving the bell tower, and upgrading the Chapel annex.
