Col. Shawn Campbell took command of the 10th Air Base Wing, the support wing for the Air Force Academy, June 20.

As commander, he’s responsible for the installation’s support services, including security, civil engineering, communications, logistics, finance, contracting, chaplaincy, lodging, medical, military and civilian personnel and force support programs, for more than 25,000 military and civilian personnel plus the school’s 4,000 cadets. He’s the caretaker of the Academy’s $3.5 billion infrastructure.

Campbell arrived at the Academy with his wife Beth, daughter Taylor, 18, and son Carter, 15.

“To command in such a unique situation is wonderful to me,” he said. “Our family is happy to be here.”

Campbell said he welcomes becoming a part of the Academy’s mission.

“This is not just a base and not just a college,” he said. “And it’s elite. We’re training tomorrow’s leaders in our national defense. The mission of the 10th ABW is to remember how we support cultivating those leaders.”

The colonel began his career in 1993 as an enlisted Airman but was accepted into officer training school in 1995 after earning a bachelor’s of science in business management. He later earned a master’s degree in business administration and became a National Security Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Campbell is not an Academy alumnus but said that doesn’t lessen his pride in being appointed the responsibility of leading the 10th ABW.

“It’s my Academy too,” he said.
