Bio

Ismênia Sales de Souza received her PhD at the University of Alabama, and a Postdoctoral at the University of Jaén, Spain. Her field of specialization is19th-century Spanish literature and her interests within her field include realism, theories of literature in the manuscripts, writings and correspondence of Benito Pérez Galdós; cultural and political history of Spain. In addition, her interests include second language acquisition and comparative literature. Presently, Dr. De Souza is a Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was the director of research from 2011-2018 for the Department of Foreign Languages at U.S. Air Force Academy. She has several publications. In addition, she has presented at national and international conferences. Finally,  Dr. De Souza has been recognized and received several awards, such as, Lynn Sandstedt Program Leadership Award presented by Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers Award, McDermott Research Award U.S. Air Force Academy and Outstanding Educator – U.S. Air Force Academy, among others.

Auburn University’s ESL Program is partnering with the government of Pernambuco to provide a course in “English as a Second Language and American Culture” to 50 government security personnel.

2013: Invited by the Secretary of Education of Recife, Pernambuco Brazil to do motivational lectures to several High Schools in Recife such as “Colégio Divino Mestre”.

2012: (DFF) was invited by the Department of Education in Recife, State of Pernambuco, Brazil, to give a lecture on 14 September 2012 on the importance of foreign languages, and the increasingly essential need for a second language, mainly English, in today’s professional world. Dr. De Souza’s message did reinforce Governor Eduardo Campos own goal and initiative, which is, to institute English as an official language in Pernambuco state schools. This invitation is evidence of the continued interest in developing closer ties between Brazilian and U.S. educational institutions.
