Bio

Lt Col Matt Snyder is the Deputy for Operations of the Department of Engineering Mechanics and an Assistant Professor of Engineering Mechanics at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Lt Col Snyder earned his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University in 2012 where he performed ground-breaking research in reconfigurable aerostructure optimization. From 2012-2016 he was an International Program Officer, London, UK for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFRL/AFOSR). While there he built a research portfolio of 62 projects devoted to providing solutions in the areas of efficient aerostructures, extreme environment aerostructures, materials modeling and development and computational methods for materials and structures. Previous to these assignments, Lt Col Snyder served at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH as a modeling and simulation engineer for the strategic and tactical infrared expendables program and as a team lead for morphing structures research.

Lt Col Snyder is a registered Professional Engineer (Ohio) and a Senior Member of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics. His primary research interests are reconfigurable aerostructures and composite material applications for hypersonic structures. He has been awarded multiple grants by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research to continue these studies.

Lt Col Snyder has served as a member of the USAFA Faculty from June 2005 – July 2009, being promoted to Assistant Professor in 2008. He rejoined the Faculty in June of 2016, where he continues to serve. He has taught the following courses:
