On this day, back in 1971 — Brigadier General Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. is the guest speaker at the eleventh annual Airman Awards Banquet. In 1975, he would become the U.S. armed forces’ first African American four-star general.
…Also on this day, back in 2003 — Operation Iraqi Freedom begins as U.S. forces fire about 40 Tomahawk cruise missiles into Iraq, striking three targets around Baghdad. The attack began the U.S.-led, multinational coalition effort to depose Saddam Hussein.
