This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Thursday, May 8th–
On this day, back in 1987 — The F-4 ‘Phantom II’ dedication ceremony takes place on the Terrazzo during the Noon Meal Formation. Three pilots who recorded kills in the plane attended the ceremony, including Steve Ritchie and Fred Olmsted, both members of the Class of ’64. (Ivy McCoy Jr. was the other pilot.) The aircraft’s six kills were the most of any American aircraft since the Korean War.
…Also on this day, back in 2017 — Heather Wilson, Class of ’82, receives Senate confirmation to become Secretary of the Air Force. She was the first Air Force Academy graduate to serve in that position.
