This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Monday, June 30th –  

On this day, back in 1961 — General Curtis LeMay becomes the Chief of Staff of the Air Force.  General LeMay was the 1965 recipient of the Academy’s T. D. White Award and the exemplar of the Class of 2013. 

…Also on this day, back in 2004 – Major General Edward Mechenbier, Class of ’64, the Air Force’s last serving Vietnam-era prisoner of war, retires.  His final assignment was as the mobilization assistant to the Commander, Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command.  He had been a POW from 14 June 1967 until 18 February 1973.
