This is your official Air Force Academy History Update for Friday, July 4th– Happy Independence Day!! 

On this day, back in 1993 – The Academy commemorates the 20th anniversary of the release of the POWs from Vietnam.  Retired Colonel George “Bud” Day, exemplar for the Academy Class of ‘17, participated in the activities, as did the parents of Captain Lance Sijan, Class of ’76. 

Also on this day, back in 2006 – The Space Shuttle orbiter Discovery lifts off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  Steven Lindsey, Class of ’82, commemorated Independence Day by serving as commander of mission STS-121, which was the fourth of his five trips to space aboard the Space Shuttle.
