Bio
My name is Mike Kloenne, and I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. I attended Moeller High School (1981) and then attended the University of Dayton, Ohio where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (1985). After graduating from college, I entered the United States Air Force through Officer Training School and spent 25 years (1985 – 2010) in the Air Force. While in the Air Force, I completed a Master of Business Administration from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, California (1992).
In the Air Force, I specialized in navigation and electronic warfare. After initial training, I flew as an electronic warfare battlefield manager on the RC-135, a reconnaissance aircraft logging over 4,000 flying hours. My most unique assignment in the Air Force was to serve as an advisor to the Royal Saudi Air Force. where I logged over 600 flying hours on Saudi military aircraft. Other military positions I have served in include being an Electronic Warfare instructor in AETC (Mather AFB, California), the command Electronic Warfare Officer for Air Mobility Command (Scott AFB, Illinois), the Chief of the Counterdrug Division for Air Forces Southern (Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona), and as an action officer for the Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities (TENCAP) unit (Schriever AFB, Colorado).
During my career in the Air Force, I had the opportunity to visit 6 continents, 35 countries and all 50 states. After retiring from the Air Force, I spent one year as an aerospace defense contractor primarily working the integration of High Energy Laser weapons into our arsenal for national defense and battlefield supremacy.
After spending a year as a defense contractor, I taught math, computer science and engineering at St. Mary’s High School here in Colorado Springs for eleven years. While there, in addition to teaching full time, I raised over $400,000 to establish the first Project Lead the Way (PLTW) engineering program, the first at a private school in the state of Colorado. St. Mary’s now offers five PLTW courses including Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, AP Computer Science Principles, Aerospace Engineering, and Engineering Design & Development.
My interests and hobbies include running, hiking, mountain climbing, geocaching, bicycling and reading. While in the Air Force, I had a wonderful opportunity to cycle with the Air Force Cycling Team for six years. I have completed six marathons, including the Marine Corps Marathon and most recently Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN. I have run numerous half marathons and the Bolder Boulder 10K. I am also a member of the High Pointers club, which seeks for its members to summit the highest points in all 50 states. I have summited 43 states so far. I am currently working on Colorado's 14ers and have tackled 20 since moving to Colorado Springs in 2008.
