Dr. Gregory A. Shoales PE has been associated with the U.S. Air Force Academy Department of Engineering Mechanics since 1991; first as an active duty Air Force faculty member, then after his retirement from active duty as a support contractor for the department’s research center, and since 2011 the Director of that center. Dr. Shoales’ professional engineering experience prior to U.S. Air Force Academy includes operational test and evaluation as an officer for Strategic Air Command, product acquisition as an officer for Air Force System Command, large caliber weapons design as a civil servant for the US Army, and composite structural design as an employee of McDonnell Aircraft Company.

Dr. Shoales, as Lt Col Shoales, directed the curriculum of the Department of Engineering Mechanics from 1998 to 2003. During this time he led the first department’s ABET 2000 evaluation and was promoted to the academic rank of Professor. Dr. Shoales’ teaching experience outside the USAF Academy includes QA 365, Applied Statistical Analysis and QA 360, Applied Quantitative Analysis at Golden Gate University. Dr. Shoales has also authored and presented Failure Analysis for the Air Logistics Center Engineer and the USAF Test Pilot School Structures Flight Test Course.

Dr. Shoales is a Professional Engineer and Life Member of several professional societies to include American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASM, and the Air Force Association. Other professional society affiliations have included American Society of Engineering Educators, The Mineral Metals and Material Society, APMI International, Society of Flight Test Engineers, and American Society of Nondestructive Testing. Non-professional affiliations include Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and a Benefactor Membership in the National Rifle Association and a Life Membership the Harley Owners Group.
