By Staff Reports, Aug. 29, 2018
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — (Editor’s Note) For the 2018 Air Force Football season, we have designated theme weeks tied to our six home games, each highlighting a domain of strength and excellence at our Academy. This week, August 27 – September 8, we honor the Long Blue Line and showcase a proud history of selfless service in the Air Force and beyond.
Interview with Cadet 1st Class Brianna Martinez:
What’s your first memory associated with the Air Force?
My first clear memory of the Air Force was when I attended an Air Show at Davis-Monthan AFB. Even though my dad was in the Air Force, I had never really experienced capabilities or assets the Air Force had until I attended the air show. I was fascinated by the planes and the culture the Air Force had growing up.
What do you think of when you hear “Long Blue Line”?
I think of a cultivated group of people who have surpassed challenges presented to them, capable of leading people to overcome any challenge or standards afforded to them.
Why did you want to come to the Academy?
I wanted to come to the Air Force Academy since I was 6 years old. I was excited about the opportunities afforded to cadets while studying here, as well as joining the Air Force as an officer leading others.
What did your family think of your decision to attend?
Being that I knew the Academy was very competitive, I didn’t tell my family about my acceptance into the Academy until I had an official letter. Being that I came from a military family where my dad was enlisted, my family was very excited for me to attend and have supported me every step of the way since arriving here.
What does it mean to you to be a part of the Long Blue Line?
For me, being a part of the long blue line means being a part of a legacy. Many people cannot fathom this place and the differing challenges it gives to people. It’s a legacy full of tradition and sacrifice that many do not know personally, yet respect so greatly.
What keeps you motivated throughout your time here at the Academy?
I’ve invested my time in people, activities, positions, and sports that have both preoccupied my time and gave me more reasons to step outside my comfort zone and venture into avenues that I have grown to love.
