Institutional Review Board

The existence of an Institutional Review Board at USAFA is mandated by the Department of Defense Directive on the Protection of Human Subjects in Research.

The purpose of the USAFA Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to protect all USAFA personnel from:

The board has the authority to request additional protection for subjects and approve or disapprove a project based on the risks to the subjects.

Board members come from a variety of backgrounds (legal, medical, social science, local community) to ensure maximum consideration for the subjects. Several cadets are included as subject population advocates.
