The Plans, Programs and Institutional Events Division manages the Academy planning process by coordinating the USAFA Strategic Plan, ensuring viability of supporting plans, and monitoring all USAFA operating and contingency plans for currency and relevance. It is also the office of primary responsibility for coordinating highest visibility USAFA institutional events, including Graduation, Parents’ Weekend, the Thomas D. White National Defense Award, and the annual Conference of Service Academy Superintendents. Another key responsibility is developing and managing USAFA Airmanship program requirements. The division is responsible for coordinating broad HHQ initiatives. See "Plans Repository" link above left for list of USAFA plans (requires CAC log-in).

INSTITUTIONAL EVENTS:

  • Parents' Weekend is an annual event held during Labor Day weekend in which families and friends of cadets visit their cadets to become familiar with the objectives and facilities of USAFA. Guests may attend classes with their cadets, hear the perspectives of Academy life from senior leadership, observe a cadet wing parade, watch a football game, and attend various other activities as desired. Typically, more than 8,000 people visit USAFA during this weekend. Parents' Weekend Website | Printable Parents' Weekend Schedule of Events

  • Graduation, which takes place at Falcon Stadium on Wednesday following Memorial Day Weekend, culminates a week of special events designed to honor the graduating class. Graduation Week begins Thursday before graduation and ends with the Thunderbird demonstration following the Graduation Ceremony on the following Wednesday. Highlights of Graduation Week include parades, ceremonies, banquets and dances. Past commencement speakers include the President of the US, the Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. • The annual Conference of Service Academy Superintendents (COSAS), is rotated among the Service Academies and is held at USAFA every five years. Attendees at this conference include senior leadership from each Service Academy (Superintendent, Commandant, Dean, Athletic Director and Admissions Director). The conference offers an opportunity to discuss issues of concern to all Academies and share best practices.

  • The highest award bestowed by the Air Force Academy, the Thomas D. White National Defense Award is presented each year to a US citizen who has contributed significantly to national defense and security. The award is presented annually at a Cadet Wing Parade on the terrazzo. T.D. White Award Fact Sheet
