Monetary Gifts Given to USAF Academy

Page updated: 30 January 2006

The Development and Alumni Programs Division serves as Secretary for the USAF Academy Memorial Board, which is the principle advisory body to the Superintendent for all aspects of memorialization at the USAF Academy. This program ensures the Air Force provides lasting honor to living or deceased Air Force personnel, Department of the Air Force civilians, and individuals from the private sector with records of outstanding and honorable service.

The Memorial Board is also the Academy agency in which the general public may address memorialization issues. The Academy operates under a self-imposed moratorium established in 1987. Memorialization of individuals by naming a building, street, or facility will be considered every 25 years on the occasion of the quarter century anniversary of the establishment of the USAF Academy (2004, 2029, 2054, etc.).

The Development Office maintains case files on individuals nominated for this type of memorialization. The Memorial Board gives primary consideration to memorializing, recognizing, and honoring graduates of the USAF Academy; however, non-graduates whose accomplishments relate to the mission of the USAF Academy and motivate cadets are also eligible. Several avenues exist to recognize individuals and units. The Cadet Honor Court memorializes all United States air-related units recognizing those who diedin the performance of their duties. The Cemetery Memorial Wall recognizes air-related units by placement of a plaque on existing walls or by donating a new section to the Memorial Wall. The Graduate Memorial Wall recognizes deceased USAF Academy graduates killed in direct hostile action or direct support of activities therein. The Cadet/Graduate Rolls of Honor recognize cadets and active duty graduates who died in the line of duty. The Officer/NCO Rolls of Honor recognize deceased active duty, retired, or honorably discharged USAF officers and noncommissioned officers who were not graduates of the USAF Academy. Memorial endowment funds are normally administered by the USAF Academy Association of Graduates.
