IITA has expanded research areas to include Research Centers. When operations are underway and the centers are no longer dependent on IITA, the centers will be transferred to an academic department at the Academy or become stand alone entities.
The Geospatial Technology Center (GTC) located at the Academy was formally opened 7 July 2005 under the name of the Geospatial Information Support Center (GISSC), with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The Center was conceived as a central repository for Air Force GIS information. The center was conceived as single repository for civil engineering information to avoid duplication of effort in developing GIS data collection and applications. However, the current primary focus is to develop tools at the installation level for command and control that can be overlaid on a digital map. The Center is in the forefront of research and development. It is also a tool for education and training for cadets at the Academy. Personnel are actively working on projects that will be useful to Air Force Bases world wide.
The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) is fosters leading edge concepts and technology in research on learning and teaching pedagogy.
WEdge, formerly known as the Automated Flight Briefing Room is developing a collaborative, adaptable briefing and debriefing system for use in combat and training that facilitates the smooth flow of pertinent mission information to and from pilots and aircrews through a straightforward user-defined interface. Demonstration of the product to a wide community occurred at the Joint Expeditionary Forces Exercise (JEFX) 2006.
