The Department of Philosophy (DFPY) administers the US Air Force Academy's (USAFA) philosophy minor. It is also possible to work extensive study of philosophy into a humanities major, administered by the Department of English. We teach the USAFA's core course in ethics, Philosophy 310, and offer a large number of elective courses. DFPY is the lead department for the Dean's flagship character development program, Ethics Across the Curriculum. DFPY is very busy with activities outside the classroom. Several of our philosophers participate in the International Symposium for Military Ethics (ISME). Faculty members also pursue research interests and give guest lectures to Air Force activities around the country. Other faculty members have done work on the Air Force Core Values initiative. In October 2001 the department hosted the 55th annual meeting of the Mountain-Plains Philosophy Conference. Follow this link to learn more about our faculty. We also sponsor two distinguished lectures in ethics each year. The Joseph A. Reich, Sr., Distinguished Lecture on War, Morality and the Military Profession is given each fall, and the Alice McDermott Memorial Lecture in Applied Ethics is given each spring. Military officers: Do you have an academic background in philosophy? Are you interested in a special duty assignment teaching with DFPY? |
