ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS (#10-02P)

The Department of Physics anticipates filling an externally funded Assistant Professor position beginning December 21st, 2009.  The initial appointment will terminate on June 30th, 2012.  Subsequent re-appointments of up to four years in length will be based upon an assessment of performance, Air Force and departmental needs, and research funding availability.   The United States Air Force Academy is an undergraduate institution which awards the Bachelor of Science degree as part of its mission to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.  Applications are solicited from candidates who have an interest in undergraduate teaching, and who also have substantial operational experience in space surveillance, control and characterization, such as satellite drag modeling, spectral characterization of payloads, and special and general perturbation space tracking techniques.  The successful candidate will lead efforts to integrate modeling and simulation research into a new space surveillance and space situational awareness curriculum.  The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the Academy’s newest two-meter satellite-tracking telescope program and lead research integration efforts with Air Force Space Command for improved space capabilities.  Preference will be given to candidates with strong interests in teaching physics both to nonscientists and physics majors, conducting quality research in a team setting, and collaborating with external research and development communities.  The position requires an earned doctorate in physics or a related field.  The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.  Send a letter of application, curriculum vitae (include country of citizenship), legible copies of your official transcripts, and the names, addresses, and phone numbers of three references familiar with your professional work to:  10 FSS/DPCU, (ATTN:  Ms. Carolyn McGraw, #10-02P), 5136 Eagle Drive, Suite 121, U.S. Air Force Academy, CO 80840.  Applications must be received by November, 23rd, 2009.  The United States Air Force Academy values the benefits of diversity among the faculty to include a variety of educational backgrounds and professional and life experiences.  The Federal Government is an equal opportunity employer.  U.S. citizenship required.
