Department of

Military Strategic Studies

Core Division

The Core Division was created to ensure internal coordination between the two MSS core courses, and external integration with other academic departments. The opportunity to shape each and every cadet here in their second and fourth years of officer development is a professional responsibility at the heart of the Academy experience. The Core Division mission is:

... provide a professional academic foundation in military strategic studies that is effectively integrated into the Air Force Academy core curriculum

The Core Division fulfills its mission through creating and managing two separate core sources.

Cadets will take the first core course, MSS 200, Military Theory and Strategy during their second year at USAFA. MSS 200 provides a contextual and theoretical basis for understanding military power. This introductory course builds a cadet’s basic theoretical foundation for military theory and strategy by studying classical and contemporary theorists. Through this course, we strive to provide each cadet a solid grounding in military theory and strategy.

Cadets will take the second core course, MSS 400, Joint and Coalition Operations during their last year at USAFA. Built upon the USAFA core, this course is very much a capstone course providing Cadets an understanding of joint and combined application of military power. Through this course, we strive to provide each cadet a capstone core course in military strategic studies to school each cadet in joint and combined operations.
