Quarterly and annually, individuals from across the Department of Military and Strategic Studies are selected for their outstanding performance and contributions, above and beyond what is considered their normal responsibilities. The following awards honor their contributions to our cadets, our Academy and our Nation:
Outstanding Instructor in Military and Strategic Studies Major's Courses
Excellence in Educational Technology
The Outstanding Academy Educator (OAE) Award is presented annually to recognize one instructor in the Department of Military strategic Studies who by personal example and performance best characterizes the principles of excellence in education. This individual is considered the best of the best in the areas of teaching skills, innovation in the classroom, curriculum and course development, publications or presentations, supervision, positive attitude/image, impact on the USAFA mission, and contributions above and beyond, including community and cadet service.
Current Winner: Lt Col Daniel J. McLagan
The Department of Military & Strategic Studies, Allen E. Dorn award winner is selected from researchers across the department based upon research depth, breadth, and integration into the MSS discipline accomplished during the current academic year. Criteria for selection include completion of published articles, book chapters, national conference presentations, invited guest speaker invitations, conference organizing, etc.

Each year the Erwin R. Bleckley and Harold E. Goettler Award, Outstanding Instructor in Military Strategic Studies Major's Courses, is presented to one individual. Winners have demonstrated excellence in classroom instructions, course involvement and responsibilities, course-focused research, and professional attitude/image. Additionally, winners must demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject content, superb classroom organizational skills, portray a commanding image, and connect with the students.

Excellence in Educational Technology
The Department of Military & Strategic Studies, Dr. Dorri Karolick award winner is selected from department faculty and staff based upon innovative teaching technologies that improve the department's effectiveness in the learning environment. Criteria for selection include integration of multi-media technology in classrooms and learning labs, impact on cadets and faculty within the department, and collaboration with external agencies.
Current Winner: Major Yuki Kimura, Japanese Air Self-Defense Force
This award recognizes outstanding achievement in the MSS area of study. This award is presented annually at the Individual awards Ceremony during graduation week. To be considered, first class cadets must major in the discipline and meet the minimum cumulative GPS of 2.80, Major GPA or 3.0, and MPA of 2.75. Generally, at least 10 cadets compete for this award.
Current Winner: Cadet First Class Ryne Hanson
The Philip D. Caine Award is presented to the most outstanding instructor in each MSS core course. Winners must have demonstrated excellence in classroom instruction, course involvement and responsibilities, course-focused research, and professional attitude/image. Additionally, winners must demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject content, superb classroom organizational skills, portray a commanding image, and connect with the students. In making nominations, nominators shall heavily weight most heavily the input of the course director responsible for each core course.

Each year individuals from across the department are selected for their outstanding performance and contributions, above and beyond what is considered their normal responsibilities. These individuals are recognized by the appropriate DoD category within which their position falls. Individuals may be honored in the categories of General Schedule 1-8, Professional, Company Grade Officer and Field Grade Officer.
