3rd Annual Thunderbird Invitational
Mock Trial Tournament

Air Force Thunderbirds

The Air Force Academy Mock Trial Team will host its 3rd Annual Thunderbird Invitational Tournament on Veteran’s Day weekend, November 10-11, 2012 in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Competing at the Thunderbird Invitational is a unique opportunity for mock trial teams for many reasons; the most evident is the tournament’s connection to the military.  The tournament is appropriately held on Veteran’s Day weekend each year as a tribute to all who have served.  The tournament is named “Thunderbird” because the Air Force Thunderbirds are a prolific symbol of the Air Force and play a special role at the Air Force Academy as they perform annually at the USAFA graduation.  The Thunderbirds are one of the military’s premier aerial performance teams and demonstrate the type of excellence and competition we hope this tournament will come to represent.  Finally, during opening ceremonies each competing team will be assigned the “call sign” of one of our Air Force’s weapons systems.  Throughout the weekend teams will be referred to by their call sign rather than their team number or university name.

This year’s tournament will be held again at the El Paso County Judicial Complex where all teams will have the opportunity to showcase their advocacy skills in actual courtrooms.  Teams will be judged by local attorneys & judges as well as military judges and JAG officers from surrounding Air Force and Army bases.  Tours of the United States Air Force Academy will be available during the weekend for any interested teams.

Past winners of the tournament include Colorado State (call sign “Buff”) in 2010 and the Air Force Academy (call sign “Bone”) in 2011.

If you are interested in attending or have questions, contact usafa.mocktrial@gmail.com.  Interested teams may also fill out the attached registration form and submit to the email address above.  Returning teams will be given priority, after which spots are first-come, first-served.  There is no registration fee for the tournament.

Anyone interested in judging the tournament should fill out the attached Judge Form and email Maj Matthew Bush at matthew.bush@usafa.edu or call (719) 333-2765.
