Educational Outcomes
To prepare cadets to attain the Program Educational objectives (PEOs) after graduation, we established a set of Student Outcomes (SOs) for the program.  These describe what we expect of our program cadets upon graduation.  They were written so as to embrace the intent of ABET Criteria 3, Students Outcomes and 9, ME Program.  The Student Outcomes are the same as ABET Criteria a-k, with minor adjustments.  We document the PEOs and SOs in the USAFA Curriculum Handbook, our course catalog. (See United States Air Force Academy Curriculum Handbook 2013-2014, page 192-193).  Minor changes to ABET’s SOs (d), (g), and (h) wording are annotated in bold, underlined italics.  These additions to three SOs better align a-k with USAFA’s mission.  According to our program’s SOs, mechanical engineering graduates shall have attained the following upon graduation (a shorthand designation is shown for each SO a-k as defined in bold and within quotation marks)
  (a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering - “Application of Math/Science/Engr
  (b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data- “Experimentation
  (c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability- “Design
  (d) an ability to lead and function on multidisciplinary teams- “Teamwork
  (e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems- “Solving Engineering Problems
  (f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility- “Professional & Ethical Responsibility
  (g) an ability to communicate effectively both written and orally- “Communication
  (h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a military, global, economic,            environmental, and societal context- “Solution Impacts
  (i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning- “Life-Long Learning
  (j) a knowledge of contemporary issues- “Contemporary Issues
  (k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice- “Engineering Tools
Student Outcomes directly support Program Educational Objectives by establishing the undergraduate foundation for future success in the PEOs.  As cadets demonstrate satisfaction of the Student Outcomes prior to graduation, they are best prepared to attain the Program Educational Objectives as Air Force officers and/or program graduates several years after graduation.  Each Student Outcome addresses specific post-graduation goals as described by the Program Educational Objectives.  Accordingly,  the following table shows the direct relationship of the Student Outcomes to the Program Educational Objectives.  As the table demonstrates, each Program Educational Objective is supported by at least one Student Outcome.
