Glossary of Terms and Acronyms

Welcome to the Glossary page. There are a number of terms and acronyms used in this site that may not be familiar to you. Some of the most commonly used terms and acronyms are listed in alphabetical order with their meanings to aid you in navigating our web site.


A - H

ABET - Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology; this is the body that accredits our Engineering mechanics and Mechanical Engineering degree programs

Academic Year - 1 August through 31 July

Accreditation - Certification by the accreditation body for Engineering and Technology programs (ABET)

Assessment/Assessment Plan - The process by which we determine, or evaluate, whether our Engineering Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering programs are meeting their stated goals and the customer's (constituency's) needs.

Capstone Design - The final design course all our majors take that integrates all aspects of our engineering programs.

CEE - Center for Educational Excellence; an office at the US Air Force Academy that supports the faculty by offering opportunities to improve their teaching skills via workshops and presentations.

Constituents/Constituency - our "customers"; everyone who is served by our programs; Faculty, Students, Graduates, Supervisors of Graduates, EPAC

Criterion/Criteria - The attributes we must demonstrate our Engineering Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering programs meet in order to remain accredited.

Course Objectives - objectives of each course offered by the Department of Engineering Mechanics that are traced to Student Outcomes these are the attributes students must meet or demonstrate in order to pass the course.

Course Review Package - a document containing information on the latest academic yearly offering of a course; each course offering culminates with a Course Review Package which is used to document changes and improvements recommended by the course director for each offering; part of our assessment process.

Curriculum Vitae - faculty resumes and credentials

DF - Dean of Faculty; responsible for implementation of the academics portion of the US Air Force Academy's mission

DFEM - Dean of Faculty Department of Engineering Mechanics; responsible for implementing the Engineering Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering programs at the US Air Force Academy

Evaluator - person designated by ABET to evaluate our Engineering Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering degree programs.

EM - Engineering Mechanics

EPAC - Engineering Program Advisory Council; the professional component of our constituency; they evaluate the Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes for each of our programs and offer recommendations for improvement.

ME - Mechanical Engineering

OPR - Officer of Primary Responsibility; the person responsible for implementation of a certain component of our program

PAT - Program Assessment Team; members of the faculty responsible for ensuring our programs meet certain ABET Criteria; they are an essential part of the annual Program Review; OPRs for one of the programs or an ABET Criterion

POC - Point of Contact

Program Assessment Team - members of the faculty responsible for ensuring our programs meet certain ABET Criteria; they are an essential part of the annual Program Review; OPRs for one of the programs or an ABET Criterion

Program Book - documentation of the annual Program Review; results of the Program Review are documented and tracked via action items

Program Educational Objectives - ABET's Criterion 2; the objectives of the Mechanical Engineering degree program; these are the attributes we expect each of our graduates to demonstrate a few years after graduation

Student Outcomes - ABET's Criterion 3; the attributes we expect each of our graduates to demonstrate at graduation
