Course Description:

 

Information Storage and Retrieval. 3(1). Introduction to the basic concepts of database and information storage systems. Topics include data models, database design theory, database performance, transaction processing, web-database interaction, Compression, techniques for handling large volumes of data, and contemporary database issues. Hands-on projects emphasize basic database and information storage and retrieval techniques. Final Exam.

Comp Sci 210 or Comp Sci 211

Course   Objectives:  

Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to:
  1. Demonstrate basic working knowledge of DBMS concepts
  2. Design and implement web-based applications using databases
  3. Understand the relational model
  4. Use fundamental SQL concepts to formulate database queries
  5. Design and implement a database system using Microsoft Access
  6. Normalize a relational database to at least 3NF
  7. Analyze the factors affecting database performance
  8. Analyze social and ethical implications of databases
  9. Be familiar with database topics of current interest
