Course Description:

 

 

Introduction to Computing 3(1). An introduction to principles, applications, capabilities, and limitations of computer systems. Topics include Computer hardware, algorithms, information representation, networks, computer security, computers and society, system and application software, and computer programming. Students will learn how to use their own computers more effectively. Final Exam.  

In addition, this course is a primary contributor to the development and assessment of the following USAFA outcomes:

        Skills:              2.1  Quantitative and Information Literacy
                                2.3  Critical Thinking

        Knowledge:    3.1  Heritage and Application of Air, Space and Cyberspace Power
                               3.6  Principles of Engineering and the Application of Technology

Course   Objectives:  

Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to:
  1. Design and describe algorithms for simple problems.
  2. Implement algorithms using a computer-based problem solving tool.
  3. Use common information technology applications effectively.
  4. Apply common computer security practices, as well as understanding of the threats associated with information warfare.
  5. Understand basic details of computer hardware, operating systems and computer networks.
  6. Understand social and ethical issues of computing.
  7. Understand how information is represented in computers.
  8. Apply basic techniques of modeling and simulation.
