CDX Lab

The DFCS Cyber Defense Exercise Lab supports information assurance research and provides hands-on experience in public key infrastructure (PKI) and computer network defense (CND). The lab is part of a virtual private network connecting each of the five military academies, supporting the annual Cyber Defense Exercise (CDX) competition between the military academies held in April. The lab consists of a range of computer and networking equipment, including 16 Dell Power Edge 1550 Servers (1 GHz Pentium III, 512 MB RAM, 2 x 18 GB HD), 2 Apple G-4s, and 2 Sun Nextra NX1s. Students in CS 468, Analysis and Design of Secure Networks, use the lab to conduct information assurance research, practice securing a variety of services, operating systems, and hardware architectures, and to compete in the annual CDX. The lab also supports faculty research projects for anyone who has computing-intensive applications during the CDX "off-season."

IW Lab

The DFCS/NSA Information Warfare Lab supplies hands-on experience in computer assurance and information attack to cadets enrolled in CS 438 Computer Security and Information Warfare. The IW lab consists of 24 student machines and 2 instructor machines. In addition, the lab contains a stand-alone network for students to attack. The stand-alone IW network consists of a variety of platforms with varying degrees of security, including routers and switches, for cadets to practice their hacking skills. This stand-alone network may or may not connect to USAFANet and/or the Cyber Defense Exercise network. The stand-alone IW network will have at least one firewall and two intrusion detection systems.
