Advanced Degree Sponsorship

Military Positions | Military FAQ | Advanced Degree Sponsorship

All advanced degree sponsorees will at some point in their career join the faculty at the Academy to teach.

Sponsorship Programs
Each year DFCE sponsors one to two candidates for a PhD/DE and one to two for MS/ME degrees.  Sponsorship for a Masters degree is typically for 1 to 1.5 years - normally 1 year is allotted, but the time may be extended depending on the degree, prerequisites, and undergraduate courses.  PhDs (including D.E. programs) are 3 years - PhD sponsorships are usually awarded to those at USAFA who have proven their academic and leadership capabilities and are being developed for senior positions in the department, however, anyone may apply.

The choice is up to you, with some constraints. The school must be willing to get you through their program in your time allotted, must offer the courses we require for your area of study, and have an annual cost of $19,000 or less. Many state schools offer in-state rates to military. Some of the schools attended by our sponsored faculty members have been Texas, Texas A&M, Illinois, Purdue, Penn St, Virginia Tech, Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Minnesota, California, and Stanford.

Requirements for Advanced Degree Sponsorship

  • GRE verbal 153 (500 on old scale), quantitative 148 (600 on old scale)
  • GPA 2.8 major, math, & overall
  • Updated Airman Development Plan
  • 1-8 years commissioned active duty time (up to 12 years for PhD)

Competitive Military Applicants have:

  • 3.0 GPA or better

USAFA Faculty Pipeline packages
Remain vigilant for AMS Robot emails or DCO meetings about advanced academic degree programs or consult the AFPC CE Assignments officer for application package requirements and submission information (, DSN 665-3452, or (210) 565-3452.)  Typically a cover letter, letters of recommendation, academic transcripts, and GRE scores are required.

AFPC dictates the timeline for application packages, but the application deadline is usually in the summer, selections made in the fall, with PCSs to USAFA occurring the following summer.
