Picture of instructor presenting a magic showThe Department of Chemistry has many community outreach programs.  We present our very popular "Chemistry Magic Show", which is a series of chemistry demonstrations, over 80 times per year to local schools, civic groups, boy scouts, and girl scouts.  The Chemistry Magic Shows allow kids of all ages to experience the fun and wonder of science.  We also conduct chemistry workshops on a variety of topics at USAFA and at schools.  The Chemistry Department is a big participant in the Academy-wide Summer Seminar program which give potential Academy candidates a chance to experience what it's like to attend the Academy. We go on the road to present workshops on "Energy and the Environment", where participants control the world's supply and demand of energy in a fast-paced computer simulation.  We provide expertise and resources by supervising and assisting chemistry events in the district, regional, and state Science Olympiad interscholastic tournaments. In addition, the department of chemistry conduct a two-week study camp at USAFA to prepare top scoring students from the National Olympiad to compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad where they experience new cultures and share similarities and differences between themselves and their counterparts. We lend our expertise to local area science teachers, conducting hands-on experimental workshops at USAFA. Finally, we act as mentors and advisors for local area kids for science fair projects and for the opportunity to see what it is like to be a professional scientist.
