about CSL

Community Service and the concept of Service Leadership are part of the Center for Character and Leadership Development's efforts to offer cadet development programs which emphasize one of the Academy's central core values, "Service Before Self." The Cadet Service Leadership (CSL) Program, part of the Center's Integration and Outreach Directorate, attempts to take this core value from the theoretical concepts of the classroom to actual experiences with the goal of a lifelong internalized "volunteer service ethic" and understanding of the value of serving others, particularly in the area of community service. The program has a leadership objective, in that most of the cadet-run service leadership activities have well defined elements of leadership; initiative, interpersonal communications, goal setting, critical thinking, organization, planning and responsibility. Historically, USAFA has performed between 20-30K hours of service learning projects during the course of an academic year. These hours included basic community service projects as well as our annual Alternative Spring Break in which we partner with Habitat for Humanity to build homes in locations across the nation.
